Last night, at midnight, it was announced that Boris Johnson had won the London Mayoral Elections. Not only that, but the BNP (British National Party) had also gained a seat.
I had once believed that the electorate was enlightened enough to have the right to vote, I now know otherwise. Epiphany.
Despite the claims of the ignorant, Boris is not the man for the job. Anyone who has seen him interviewed would know that he is an imbecile. I admit, he was okay on "Have I Got News For You", but beyond that, he's useless. A "buffoon", as countless people have often put it. Not only is he not from London (he's from Henley), but he doesn't
ever turn up to vote on London issues, nor does he turn for meetings. He's also, in case you hadn't noticed, from the far-right calling Nelson Mandela's presidency in South Africa "the majority tyranny of black rule". He also called for a halt into the Stephen Lawrence inquiry and called improvements to anti-racism laws "weird" and "Orwellian". Not only that, he has kept some fairly unsavoury and criminal company:
[link] . He is useless, and I don't know why the people voted for him.
In contrast, much as I hate Ken Livingstone, he has in fact been rather good for London. The buses now run on time, the bus lanes were an unbelievable improvement, the tubes work properly and the congestion charge was actually a good thing.
Even worse than voting for Boris, however, was the fact that Richard Barnbrook now has a seat in the London Assembly. This is a national embarrassment. London is the financial capital of the world, a massive tourist destination and one of the world's cultural centres. To have a fascist in it's council is ridiculous. I can't even express fully how incensed I am with the British People, who are now, far from being an enlightened democratic and tolerant group, seem to have fallen to the level of the chav filth. I am not impressed.
How short are your memories: do you not remember the disaster of Thatcher and Major?
I was once proud to be British, now I feel embarrassed.
EDIT
I've decided I'm still proud to be British, but I'm disappointed in the rest of us.

[x] <-- Nail here for a new Monitor, please.
I know, maybe you should find yourself a group, then you wouldn't be standing alone, against the might of the British Empire, with which I allegedly validate myself. Tell me, does that mean that you don't support your country in the olympics, a football team maybe? If you dislike patriotism do you, say, disagree with international sport? Academic Olympiads? Other international competitions? Would you take it further to say that I mustn't take pride in my school? In my family? In myself? How far do you want to go down the chain? Instead of validating yourself, try justifying your comments.

I quake in fear, and dare not utter a single word.
Poor me, standing alone in this world, without the need to belong to any group in order to validate myself and feel a sense of worth!
I take my leave now, hoping I helped you in some way, but knowing I did not.

Patriotism is fine, as long as it doesn't become nationalism, and since I'm not a nationalist, but a liberal, I don't think that my pride in my country is hurting you or anyone else, and we are the centre of the world, since the British Empire was the biggest empire in known history. Maybe you're just envious.

Much as it is a nice line, surely then supporting your country in the Olympics &c. would make one vicious... Additionally, I'm afraid that I don't know what you're referring to, so if you could enlighten me, that'd be great.
