***UPDATE***
Captain's Log 18th March 2009, 22:03 HRS
So now I have completed the image upload system, watermarking, cropping, resizing... all that... all done... To that end the watermark/crop position-ers were created, and they were pretty easy, but slick. It all works pretty beautifully.
What's left on the image uploading front is a Collection browser which will provide a nice GUI for selecting collections to add an image to. I plan on it having iPhotoesque functionality (for those of you who are cool/enlightened enough to be using macs instead of PCs (tho' I do like Ubuntu as well). Anyway, it's all going most excellently, albeit slowly.

---

So basically, here's how it's going:
I've been working mostly on the interfaces I will use to upload artworks, collections, projects, files and news. I've almost modelled it with the dA interface in mind, but it's more advanced.
So far I've almost finished the interface for artwork upload. I've created a dynamic upload JS object which is like the one on dA (id erat it shows you the progress of the upload as a little icon while you continue to write out title/description et cetera). I've also sorted a category selector object which just is a better version (for the purpose) of the standard HTML <select>. I just finished creating a position selector which will basically choose the position of the thumbnail crop and also of the watermark (if one is desired). I also created a Rich Text editor for adding comments to my pieces (my comments, not yours). That's pretty much it (so far) for Javascript. I have yet to implement a collection/file browser javascript base, but that isn't in the works yet.
As far as the PHP end goes, I have created the classes and functions necessary to create the watermark, and also to do the cropping, the only implementation I have not yet completed is the actual upload processing (simply a question of putting these prepared classes/methods into action. I haven't dealt with the video side of it all yet, alas! That will come. The major classes for Artwork, Collection, File, Project, News are all finished though, and the databases are set up. I will start work on the collection side when I have finished artworks, and so on down the list.
Once I have finished the upload/add/edit interface, I will work on a database GUI (similar to phpmyadmin but geared toward portfolio use). I then intend to work on the portfolio itself. This should be very interesting as I wish to execute a new type of search interface which includes keyword searching, category selection and collection browsing all in the same place. After that, I need to build in customised syntax for file descriptions and my HTML in general such that I can use stuff like {file|123456} and it will insert a link/preview of that file. That will most likely be in javascript.

Anyway.. to work!
